A friend who stays back for you...

The rain hammered a relentless rhythm on the bus shelter roof. Wind whipped at the flimsy plastic walls, sending shivers down Maya's spine. Her phone, clutched desperately in her hand, displayed a single, blinking message: "Train cancelled." Panic clawed at her throat. Missing this interview could mean losing the dream job she'd been chasing for months.
Just then, a familiar laugh cut through the storm's fury. Sarah, her best friend, materialized through the downpour, hair plastered to her forehead, a rucksack slung over one shoulder.
"Maya! What are you doing here?" Sarah's voice, usually brimming with cheer, held a note of concern.
A wave of relief washed over Maya. Briefly, she explained the predicament, her voice trembling. Sarah's smile faded, replaced by a determined glint.
"Okay, don't panic. We'll figure this out." Sarah, ever the pragmatist, assessed the situation. Taxis were out of the question in this weather. The nearest bus wouldn't come for another hour.
"There's a bike path along the highway," Sarah announced, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "It's a long shot, but maybe we can make it."
Maya stared at her, aghast. The path was notorious, a narrow ribbon of asphalt hugging the edge of a busy highway. In this weather? On a bike?
"Are you crazy?" Maya blurted, picturing flying debris and angry drivers.
"A little," Sarah conceded with a wink. "But desperate times call for desperate measures. Besides, I wouldn't let you miss this interview, would I?"
Before Maya could protest, Sarah had already secured a second helmet from her bag – one she always carried "just in case." They sprinted through the rain, Sarah navigating puddles with a practiced ease.
The bike ride was a blur of wind, rain, and white-knuckled terror. Sarah, a seasoned cyclist, kept up a steady pace, her voice a reassuring presence behind Maya. Yet, every passing car felt like a near miss.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the towering glass building of Maya's interview destination came into view. They arrived breathless, soaked to the bone, but just in time.
Inside, the receptionist's eyes widened at their disheveled state. But before she could question them, Sarah, with a charming smile and a dramatic flourish, declared, "We braved the elements themselves to get here! Surely, that deserves a chance?"
The receptionist, won over by Sarah's audacity, let them through. Maya aced the interview, her heart overflowing with gratitude for her friend.
Later, as they sat in a steaming cafe, dry towels wrapped around them, Sarah simply grinned. "See? Told you we'd make it."
"You're a lifesaver," Maya said, her voice thick with emotion. "And a lunatic, but mostly a lifesaver."
Sarah chuckled. "Friends are there for the crazy adventures, Maya. Especially the ones that land you your dream job."
In that moment, Maya realized that a true friend wasn't just someone who celebrated your victories, but someone who stayed by your side, even when the path was terrifying and rain-soaked. And that kind of loyalty was worth more than any dream job.
