John had lots of interpersonal relationship issues - strained relations with his family, disciplinary/interpersonal conflict with soliders he served with, and trouble holding down a job. The above and the fact that he went on a serial killing spree has led experts to believe he had antisocial personality disorder and possibly psychopathy.

He was the weird kid/guy at work that everyone's gut says is 1 bad day away from shooting up the place. There wasn't a lot of mental health awareness back in the early 2000's - I think the "obfuscate the murder of his wife" story gained the most traction because it was plausible and understandable (vs. random killing spree) to people back then. He was eventually caught because an old neighbor in TX (IIRC) remembered him saying something along the lines of "with a suppressor, you can shoot someone and no one will know". The FBI was able to match the ballistics from bullets in a tree stump that he used for target practice in his backyard to that of bullets in the victims.

I lived through it as a kid. He had called in a phony tip saying he "saw the shooter firing from a white panel van (work truck)". You don't realize, but those vans are fucking everywhere. I used to ride the school bus, notice them, and wonder if a bullet was just going to kill me or someone else. Most of us did. Coming right off the heels of 9/11 and the Anthrax attacks irrevocably changed the way I viewed the World.John Allen Muhammad (neé Williams) may have had a motive but it was never determined. He was a highly intelligent, highly manipulative psychopath, so it'shard to piece together his motives or believe anything he said before he was executed. Lee Boyd Malvo was brainwashed by Muhammad and may have believed he was living in a simulation during the shootings. In his police interviews, he made a lot of references to living in the Matrix, although that may have been to build an insanity defense. Again, Muhammad likely coached him on what to say to the police during their spree. He also may have been being sexually abused by Muhammad, as he stated in interviews 10 years after the shootings. He's reached out to a few victims and victims' families and apologized for what he's done. There's a slim chance he could get out of prison on parole someday. I'd believe he's genuinely remorseful, but he's literally a notorious terrorist so I doubt it will ever happen
