 I live in a city in Ontario and in the summers, drive to a rural area outside of a smaller town to get CSA vegetable boxes from a farm. We drive through this village to get there, and there is a house that has several humungous signs blasting Trudeau and praising Trump, often referring to the news headlines of the day. This past week, it was how Trump mopped the floor with Biden in the debates. There are also several US flags and confederate flags flying. I just shake my head as I drive by and think my dude, you're in Canada, for chrissake, you can probably get free counselling for your delusions.it works that way because of slavery. so back when they were trying to found the country, the slave-owning states refused to agree to ratify the constitution because they were worried that they would not have enough sway in elections where one person equals one vote, due to their small official populations. their official populations were small because they only counted white people as people. this led to the three-fifths compromise, where each enslaved black person counted as three fifths of a person (still couldn’t vote, of course), so that the southern states could raise their population and therefore get more representation in congress (since your state’s number of representatives is roughly based on population), which then gave them more electoral college votes since a state gets as many electoral college votes as the number of people they have in the congress (or 3 at bare minimum). basically, they wouldn’t agree to form the country until they were given this advantage.

in the electoral college, each state has at minimum 3 votes. today, this means that if you are from a bigger state, your vote counts less than someone from a smaller state. for example, an electoral college vote in wyoming represents 150,000 people, but in california one electoral college vote equals 500,000. so if you live in wyoming, your vote gets to be worth over 3 times as that of a californian. so, blame it on racism
